Our Origin Story

The seed of Nothing About Us Without Us was created when its founder was performing in a local children's choir. A piece of gossip was spread around that there was a child who used a wheelchair that auditioned, but was denied because the choir director didn't want to accommodate them.  A few months later, a kid with Turrets was denied for fear that they would swear on stage. (If you know anything about Turrets it is often quite the opposite.) MarySebastian was 13 when this happened, and decided then that they would create their own space where ANYONE could engage with the arts.  It took 20 years, and several half finished degrees in early childhood education, neuroscience, psychology, film studies, child development, theater, and finally a masters in social work, BUT here we are. With the beginnings of a community that can hopefully re-write how our society sees unique individuals, and empower queer, disabled, neurodivergent, BIPOC, children and other marginalized identities to live their best lives.  As an LGBTQ individual with disabilities, MarySebastian is passionate about making real world change for the communities they are a part of.

MarySebastian has over 20 years experience working with children, 15 years therapeutic experience, and has been involved in the arts since age 7 (almost 30 years!!) They utilize a combined approach in sessions that includes expressive arts (music, movement, visual arts, and drama), somatic work (a body focus approach), and a social justice lens accommodating individuals with disabilities, LGBTQ, and other unique identities.
