Mindfulness And Somatic Work

Mindfulness

Check out our  mindfulness
group!

Mindfulness is a big buzz word lately. But oftentimes, we can struggle to "empty our minds" in order to "meditate". I have some news for you, if your mind was completely empty you would be asleep, or dead.

Nothing About Us Without Us Creative Arts Therapies strives to take an approach to mental health that works for clients, especially when it comes to mindfulness. Becoming aware of yourself, your emotions, your environment, and your feelings, can be one of the most liberating experiences, and many different forms of mindfulness have been proven to reduce stress, provide calm, and assist individuals with improving their tolerance to challenging life situations.

Somatic Work

Soma is Latin for body, and Somatics, is the practice of  connecting with, and processing, experiences through ones body. Everyone has a nervous system, and when that nervous system perceives a threat, the neurons in your brain fire infinitesimally faster to the non-verbal part of your brain, than to  the verbal part. This means that if you have experienced trauma, part of that trauma has been experienced without words.

This is why somatic work can be so helpful in therapy. Talk therapy is a traditional, and often very helpful way to process what has happened to you, but processing your experiences through what your body is feeling and sensing can often help clients where traditional talk therapy has failed.
